Victoria Fort

However, on the first attempt in 1602, the Dutch failed to capture the fort due to the strength of the Portuguese defense.

Not giving up, the Dutch built a defense post on the north coast known as Kasteel van Verre.

Luck only turned to the Dutch on February 25, 1605 when under the leadership of Admiral Steven van der Haghen, the fort was successfully captured and renamed Fort Victoria to celebrate the victory.
